Producers Gain Practical AI Skills at Te Mania Angus Morning in the Yards

Beef and dairy cattle producers recently gathered at Te Mania Angus for Morning in the Yards, a hands-on session focused on joining practices. The event offered participants an in-depth look at Te Mania Angus’s Angus breeding programs, combining practical demonstrations with expert advice from the Te Mania team.

Attendees followed Te Mania Angus females through the yards, gaining insight into key processes integral to our operation. Led by Director Tom Gubbins, the day featured demonstrations of artificial insemination (AI) and joining procedures, including CIDR pulling and EMA/fat scanning on maiden cows.

Adding another layer of expertise, TMA Animal Specialist and Technology Manager Tamás Pable shared his knowledge on semen quality and the application of fresh semen, further enhancing the day’s learning opportunities.

Caramut cattle producer Harry Kelly, who manages 1,000 Angus cows and a 1,200-head dairy herd, found the event offered practical takeaways for both sides of his business.

“We do sporadic AI with the beef herd but use it more extensively in the dairy, so I came with a strong interest,” Harry explained. “Tom’s introduction was particularly helpful, especially the focus on condition scoring and EMA/fat measurement. I left with ideas to improve AI in our dairy herd.”

Harry also valued the networking opportunities, particularly connecting with Rob Wyld from Sapien Technology. “The day was invaluable for the new connections I made,” he added.

For Luke Fish of Austin Farming, a recent addition to Team Te Mania, the event provided fresh insights for refining his operation.

“This was my first time at Mortlake, and I was interested in comparing our joining program to Te Mania’s,” Luke shared. “Their AI practices set the standard, and I’m confident we can tweak aspects of our own program.”

Harley Cobb from Pardoo Cattle Company found the visit to Mortlake both informative and nostalgic. His family’s property played a foundational role in establishing the Te Mania Angus herd in the 1970s.

“The event was very approachable and packed with valuable information,” Harley noted. “I found the work on heat detection particularly insightful. Te Mania’s practice of a second round of AI isn’t something we currently do, but I can see its advantages.”

Harley left with actionable ideas to implement at both Pardoo and HM Angus, his family’s stud in Birregurra. “I’m really glad I attended,” he said.
