AuctionsPlus buyers demonstrated their strong leap of faith in the Te Mania Angus brand, leading to the full clearance of 105 high-performance Angus bulls, which averaged $13,028 at the Te Mania Angus northern spring bull sale at Walgett on Tuesday.
With 159 registered buyers from five states online via AuctionsPlus, remote buyers accounted for 26 purchases, including the sale-topping bid of $30,000. Holcombe Pastoral, Toobeah, Queensland, won the spirited bidding duel for the top-priced bull, Lot 47, Te Mania Tanker T372. This standout bull, a high-growth son of Te Mania Quebec Q854, exemplifies the pinnacle of Angus cattle genetics.
Te Mania Angus director Hamish McFarlane highlighted the bull’s impressive Angus performance traits, noting, “Tanker T372 has excellent shape and bends the growth curve with a BWt of +3.3 and 600D Wt of +162. With a well-balanced set of EBVs and suitability for use over heifers, he has very good structure and weighed in at 892kg on sale day at 25 months old. Tanker was the standout son of Quebec Q854, a sire that performs exceptionally well in progeny testing through Team Te Mania herds and is part of cohort 12 of the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program (ASBP), a research project between Angus Australia and the MLA.”
In a strong endorsement of Te Mania’s profitable Angus breeding program, the 92 sons of homebred sires were highly sought after, selling for as high as $30,000. This included:
- 10 sons of Te Mania Kirby VTMK138 averaged $16,500
- 8 sons of Te Mania Neon VTMN1387 for $14,500
- 10 sons of Te Mania Quebec VTMQ854 for $15,200
- 5 sons of Te Mania Quade VTMQ23 sold for $13,800
- 5 sons of Te Mania Rocco VTMR795 sold for $13,400
Hamish says all five sires will continue to have sons in future Te Mania Angus sales, including its 2025 on-property Autumn Bull Sale on March 5.
Hamish emphasised the value of selecting sons of homebred sires for buyers looking to improve their profitability. “Chasing homebred sires allows buyers to bid confidently on sons of high-accuracy carcass sires, providing an unparalleled level of certainty in knowing what they are buying.”
The sale once again offered a range of prices accessible to any commercial producers seeking to take a genetic leap forward in their herds. Thirty-three bulls sold for $10,000 or less, making these top-tier Angus genetics available to a broader range of buyers.
Repeat buyers from the Walgett district were strong participants, purchasing 21 bulls, led by Michael O’Brien, who took home 8 bulls for an average of $13,000. Return and new buyers from Queensland purchased 28 bulls, while 64 will remain in NSW, and 10 bulls will head south to Victoria. Many of these clients have been supporting our breeding program in recent years and have purchased commercial females from the Team Te Mania program to fast-track their breeding programs and marketing options.
Te Mania Angus has been running this sale for 18 years in collaboration with Chris Clemson and Russell Hiscox, whose support has been pivotal to the growth and success of our spring sale. This year, it was great to have the Nutrien network involved, following the acquisition that resulted in the newly formed Nutrien Clemson Hiscox. Paul Dooley conducted the sale from the rostrum, ensuring the smooth operation of this landmark event in Angus genetic selection.
