At Mumbannar, in south western Victoria, Steve and Sue and family Brain run the Boona herd, producing around 500 prime feeder steers annually. Cattle from this Team Te Mania herd are highly sought after for the grass-fed and long-fed markets which supply high end restaurants throughout China, the European Union and Australia.
The Boona herd is run on pasture only, and a key focus has always been on efficiently balancing grass-fed production with input costs. Pastures are boosted in Summer months by irrigation from two centre pivots.
Steve’s latest efficiency tool is using a drone to assist checking water troughs, calving and irrigation systems.
