WELLINGTON LODGE - RICHARD AND EMMA McFARLANE; KEITH AND JANET McFARLANE
SOUTH AUSTRALIA - TAILEM BEND
Team Te Mania steers bred at Wellington Lodge have established a solid reputation for their performance and have been awarded numerous industry accolades.
These awards include: 2002 - Two CAAB awards for Progeny of Single Sire; and Certificate of Excellence for Best Overall Performance; 2003 - Runner up in the SA Meat Industry Awards for Excellence, Producer category; 2004 - Best Overall Perfornmance CAAB and Certificate of Excellence for Marbling Compliance. 2005 - Best Overall Performance against CAAB specifications, Certificate of Excellence for Marbling, and 3 awards for the progeny of a single sire CAAB.
And most recently, in February 2009, Wellington Lodge won the inaugural Southern Grassfed Carcase Classic Competition run by Teys Brothers at Naracoorte.
Wellington Lodge took out Class 1, which was open to steers with a maximum of four teeth and 300 to 420 kg HSCW range.
Working closely with Te Mania as part of the Team since 1995, allows the Wellington Lodge breeding program to be totally focussed on the needs of the long fed Japanese B3 market.
Information flowing from the artificial insemination program and Breedplan recording on Wellington Lodge and other Team herds, is crucial to the McFarlanes’ decision making.
As a progeny test herd, Wellington Lodge has access to the up-and-coming Te Mania semen sires, which means the herd often has daughters on the ground before a bull’s semen is in high demand, effectively fast tracking the herd’s genetic progress.
The McFarlanes aim for above 95% pregnancy rates, so put a lot of emphasis on fertility, but at the same time like to produce a relatively well framed animal.
Team membership also means the McFarlanes are part of a group of dedicated, forward thinking producers who all have similar goals.
