Te Mania Southern Autumn Bull Sale Report

Sale average $5,429 for 133 bulls
Top price $23,000

The first Mortlake on-property bull sale - and its first big-screen bull sale - held on Friday, March 19, saw a boost to last year's sale average by $539, before a crowd of more than 300 packed into the new selling centre.

WarnStd_Auction_480_x_259.jpgLot 17, the top-priced bull, went to long-time client Max Manefield of Ardenside, Tooma, NSW.

The volume buyer of the sale was David Reid's Minnamurra Pastoral, from Gunnedah in NSW.  David Reid and Manager, Dennis Power, put together a line of 26 bulls, paying to a top of $16,000 and an average of $6788.

Hot on their heels was another long time client, Morella Agricultural from Goondiwindi in Queensland, who took a total of four bulls to the high of $20,000, and average of $8750.

It was a big decision for the stud's 30th annual autumn sale to be held indoors.  When buyers are so used to watching our bulls selling through the ring, asking them to sit and watch two giant screens with videos of each sale bull and hear the auctioneer calling bids was a bit of a stretch.  But everyone seemed to grasp it immediately and there was no hesitation in bids - or enthusiasm for the idea.

Under our new structure all sale bulls are penned right outside the door so there is every chance for a final inspection before selling starts.

Max Manefield of Ardenside had no trouble with the concept.  He says once he had seen his bull's figures, and then seen him in the flesh, he knew he was going to buy him.  He said D77 will be the perfect outcross to the genetics we have at Ardenside.

VTM D77 Te Mania Daniel is a son of super sire, Te Mania Africa, out of a 2 year old heifer, Te Mania Mittagong B284.  He has outstanding figures across the board, ranging from +57 for 200-day growth to +127 for 600-days.

With +2.4% for marbling and +6.2 for eye muscle area, Te Mania Daniel is bred to beef up a herd, which is exactly what Ardenside wanted.

"We have not bought at Te Mania Angus for a couple of years and we came here wanting something to help beef up our stock," Mr Manefield adds.  "I have him targeted for our nucleus cowherd to help us produce bulls for our own breeding program."

Volume purchaser, Minnamurra Pastoral have been using Te Mania Angus genetics for some years now.  David Reid said "The Te Mania cattle suit our program of early weaning and three calvings a year".

"You can clearly see the results in our animals, we have a strong relationship with Te Mania Angus and their cattle also stand out because as well as their figures and performance, they are quiet and easy to manage."

Targeting Woolworths and the feedlot market, Mr Reid says his goal is to be all black as soon as possible.

With the growth of Minnamurra, David says he is also looking at getting involved in the hugely successful Certified Australian Angus Beef (CAAB) program as part of his business' 5-10 year plan.

Bulls were sold to every State, except WA, and several will also be shipped to Flinders and King Islands.

Other volume buyers included Robert Prowse, from Violet Town, Victoria, who put together a line of five bulls, to a top of $9000 twice, and average of $6800.

Reg Pease , Qld, paid $13,000 for Lot 27 and Farrar Memorial Agricultural High School in Tamworth paid $12,000 on Lot 128.
